Optus still offers the best 5G download speeds

Optus has been dominating again recently Opensignal Mobile Network Experience Report.

Opensignal is a leading independent insights company tracking the mobile network experience in Australia.

This report examines the performance of Telstra, Optus and Vodafone’s networks across four broad categories: overall experience, 5G experience, coverage and consistency.

Of the 13 awards up for grabs, Optus walked away with five overall wins and three joint wins. It’s the seventh time in a row Optus won the category for fastest average 5G download speeds.

Optus average 5G download speeds were 209.1 Mbps, 17% faster than Opensignal’s Telstra users and 28% faster than Opensignal’s Vodafone users. Optus’s result was roughly the same as the previous ones Opensignal report from April.

Optus won the overall and 5G Video Experience categories, the overall Games Experience category and was joint winner with Vodafone in the 5G Games Experience category.

These four categories are rated out of 100 and are based on criteria such as fast loading times, video quality and latency – the time it takes for data to travel to and from the server.

Optus again took the top spot for consistent quality (80.1%) and shared Vodafone for availability (99.3%), both rated as the percentage of testing and time users spent on Signal, respectively.

Don’t be left behind, Telstra took victory in both “Coverage Experience” categories for the third time in a row. Rated 10 points, It received 9.5 points in the overall category and 6.7 points in the 5G category.

5G availability in Australia continues to grow. While Vodafone won the category as Opensignal users were connected to 5G 53.3% of the time, all three operators saw their 5G availability scores increase. Vodafone and Optus each gained six percentage points, while Telstra gained eight percentage points.

After Shutdown of Vodafone’s 3G network The network experience has continued to improve. Optus and Telstra will close theirs 3G networks at the end of this month.

Opensignal runs tests on devices from a selection of users on each network through its own app. Data for this report was collected between July 1 and September 28, 2024.
