The standoff in Minneapolis leads to a “tragic” two-shot situation in western Minnesota

Multiple agencies are investigating the circumstances of a domestic dispute in Minneapolis that resulted in shots being fired from an apartment balcony before the suspect fled police into western Minnesota and ultimately shot two other people in a “tragic” situation.

What we know

According to authorities, around 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, Minneapolis police responded to a residence in the 2900 block of Lyndale Avenue South in Minneapolis following reports of shots fired from a residence on the popular stretch of the Lyn Lake neighborhood.

When officers arrived, they were flagged down by people who said a person was shooting from the balcony of the apartment.

First responders were then able to locate two victims, the suspect’s ex-girlfriend and a current boyfriend. A child shared by the ex-girlfriend and the suspect was in the daycare center at the time, which was then sealed off, the police said.

Pursuit by the police

After making contact with the suspect, police believe he then fled the building before leading police on an extended chase that led into western Minnesota.

The suspect was tracked to the Highway 71/23 bypass southeast of Willmar, where law enforcement believes the man attempted carjacking and then fatally shot the driver. Investigators also believe the suspect shot and injured another man at a rural home in Kandiyohi County.

Authorities took the man into custody. Officials said he has since been booked into the Kandiyohi District Jail and is being held on multiple charges, including murder. No officers used lethal force in the incident.

What we don’t know

The police have not yet provided any information about the identity of the suspect.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
