Samsung Smart TVs are next in line to get Gen AI wallpapers

Samsung Smart TVs are next in line to get Gen AI wallpapers

Key insights

  • Samsung is adding wallpapers with generative AI to its 2024 smart TVs for customization.
  • Users can create 4K images based on input and access themes such as “Happy Holidays” via Ambient Mode.
  • The feature will initially roll out in select regions including South Korea, North America and Europe.

It’s 2024 and AI is being integrated into almost everything – from texting apps to cars to smartwatches. Now Samsung is also bringing AI to its smart TVs. Following the first-ever One UI update for select models earlier this month, Samsung is rolling out a new feature for its 2024 flagship smart TVs that allows users to create AI generative wallpapers.

Samsung first announced this feature during its developer conference on October 3, 2024 and is now rolling it out to the Neo QLED and QLED 2024 models. This feature works as expected and uses generative AI to create 4K images based on user input. Samsung says this gives users the ability to customize their TVs to “truly reflect their style.”

You can now use Generative AI wallpapers on Samsung Neo QLED and QLED TVs

This feature will be available via Ambient Mode on Samsung Smart TVs. To use it, simply navigate to the “Ambient Mode” menu, select the button, and choose from themes like “Happy Holidays” or “Party.” A selection of AI-generated wallpapers will then appear from which users can choose their favorites. In addition to these custom AI wallpapers, Ambient Mode also displays useful information such as weather updates, news, and the time.

Samsung says the AI background feature will be limited to South Korea, North America and Europe for now. The rollout is scheduled to begin this month and availability is expected to expand to additional regions in 2025. Interestingly, Samsung’s smart TVs are not the first to introduce wallpapers with generative AI. Google first introduced this feature with the launch of Google TV Streamer and expanded it to all Chromecast and Google TV devices earlier this month.

Personally, I’ve always appreciated how smart TVs showcase beautiful photography from around the world. However, Gen AI wallpapers offer something different: they give users the ability to fully customize the images displayed on their TVs to their liking. This is particularly useful for seasonal events like Halloween or Christmas and allows for personalized, themed wallpapers to suit the occasion.
