Mechanicville man faces multiple charges after violating protective order and resisting arrest – Southern Maryland News Net

John Edward Nichols, 34, of Mechanicsville, was arrested and charged with multiple misdemeanors after allegedly violating a protective order, disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

The arrest occurred on October 20, 2024 following a disturbance at a residence in California, Maryland.

According to the report from Trooper Christian Spruell of the Maryland State Police Leonardtown Barrack, officers responded to a call about a disturbance at a residence on South Patuxent Beach Road around 2:08 p.m. Upon arrival, officers made contact with the victim, an adult female who has an active protection order in place.

The protective order, issued Oct. 15, 2024, prohibits Nichols from entering the residence and requires him to stay away from the victim’s home on South Patuxent Beach Road. Despite the order, Nichols was found in the apartment when the victim returned home. She told police that Nichols became angry and yelled and threatened her after he was confronted. She also stated that he threatened to choke her during the argument.

When officers attempted to arrest Nichols, he resisted, telling them, “Don’t touch me.” Nichols slapped away an officer’s hand and continued to resist on the ground, at one point putting his arm around an officer’s neck. Despite his resistance, the officers were able to restrain Nichols, although he spat at one of the officers during the struggle.

The following charges are brought against Nichols:

Violation of a protective order
Disorderly behavior
Four counts of second-degree assault
Disability and disability

Nichols was taken into custody and held on a $7,000 unsecured private bond, which was posted the same day. A court date is scheduled for December 3, 2024 in the District Court for St. Mary’s County.
