Four Buccaneers will represent tennis teams at the Southland Fall Championships

HAMMOND, La. – Four Buccaneers will be in Hammond this weekend as part of the Southland Fall Championships, which will be held at Southeastern. The women’s competition begins on Thursday while the men’s competition begins on Friday.

Each participating team sends a singles player and a doubles team to compete in a single-elimination round. The winners of each category will represent Southland at the ITA Conference Masters Championships in November.

WOMEN’S BRACKET
Anastassia Kouchnareva will be the individual representative of the Privateer women. Kouchnareva will play Asta Mietten of Lamar in the first round. A win would advance Kouchnareva to Friday’s quarterfinals against No. 1 seed Ana Veroux of Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

Kouchnareva, the most experienced student-athlete on the squad, had a 9-8 record overall and a 5-2 record against Southland opponents while playing primarily in the second flight. This is Kouchnareva’s third season with the Privateers.

In doubles, Kouchnareva will pair with the newcomer, Fleur Sprenger. The duo makes its fall debut, taking on Mietten and Lamar’s Megan Do. A win would send them into the quarterfinals against No. 1 seeds Irene Cocero and Laura Wipfli.

Sprengers is competing in her first event in a Privateer uniform.

MEN’S PREVIEW
Matthew Armbruster will represent the Privateers individually. Armbruster is fourth in a group of seven. He will play Santiago Serrano of UTRGV in the opening round, which begins Friday afternoon.

A win puts Armbruster into the semifinals against Pablo Perez Ramos of reigning Southland champions NJIT. Perez Ramos secured the decisive point for the Highlanders championship against Lamar in April.

Armbruster will compete in doubles Marc Mail to play UIW’s second-seeded duo of Alejandro Hernandez and Emilio Vila on Friday morning. Mail won his individual flight in the Battle Down the Bayou. Armbruster was part of an All-Southland doubles team last season.

The men’s event begins on Friday at 9 a.m. with the singles.
