Women’s tennis competes in the SLC Fall Championships, Bearkat invites

HAMMOND, La. – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) women’s tennis team will compete in two fall tournaments spread out this weekend.

Junior Yaiza Vazquez and in the second year Hitakamya Narwhal are preparing for the inaugural Southland Conference (SLC) Fall Championships, taking place Thursday through Sunday at the Southeastern Tennis Complex in Hammond, Louisiana.

The action begins with doubleheaders beginning Thursday at 2 p.m. Vazquez and Narwal face Nicholls’ Aada Inna/Paulina Villegas. Vazquez will play her first-round singles match against Salome Fluri of McNeese at 5 p.m.

With a win on Thursday, Vazquez/Narwal will advance to the doubles quarterfinals, where they will face No. 2 seed Lyric Bonilla/Sofia Salcedo of Incarnate Word on Friday at 11 a.m. If Vazquez wins her singles match, she will face No. 3 seed Honoka Umeda of Northwestern State on Friday at 4 p.m

The women’s doubles and singles semifinals are scheduled for Saturday at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., respectively. All championship matches will be played on Sunday, with the doubles match scheduled for 10:00 a.m. and the singles match following at 12:30 p.m

Winners of the singles and doubles classes will qualify for the 2024 ITA Conference Masters Championship, taking place November 7-10 in San Diego.

The rest of the UTRGV women’s tennis team will compete in Huntsville at the Bearkat Invite, which takes place Friday through Sunday at the Chuck & Wanda Beckner Tennis Center.
