RB Leipzig vs Liverpool LIVE: Champions League result and reaction as Darwin Nunez secures victory

RB Leipzig vs Liverpool LIVE: Champions League result and reaction as Darwin Nunez secures victory

“The referee didn’t help us” – slot after Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Chelsea at Anfield

Liverpool weathered a late Leipzig storm to secure a 1-0 win on their Champions League journey. The Reds are still unbeaten in Europe’s top flight with three wins from their three games and, together with Aston Villa, have a maximum of nine points.

There were two crucial factors at play. The first was Darwin Nunez, a striker who desperately needed a goal. He appeared in the first half and saved a header attempt from Mo Salah. Salah’s shot appeared to go into the goal, but Nunez ensured Liverpool took the lead just moments after the hosts were denied a goal.

The second factor was Liverpool’s stand-in goalkeeper Coaimhin Kelleher. The Irishman put in an excellent performance, making around six solid saves to deny a forward line including Benjamin Sesko and Xavi Simons and keep a clean sheet despite a late push from the German side.

It wasn’t pretty at times, but Liverpool handled the game well and got over the finish line.

Arne Slot emulates Bill Shankly as Darwin Nunez’s goal proves crucial in tight duel against Leipzig

Against a club that will soon worry former Reds coach Jürgen Klopp, Slot’s men set two new club records: they became the first Liverpool team to win their first six away games of a season and the first to win in 11 of theirs triumphed in the first twelve games. Slot himself emulated Bill Shankly by winning his first three European games as manager.

Nunez, who came into the starting line-up in place of the injured Diogo Jota, scored the winner in the 27th minute, firing home Mohamed Salah’s header, and a seventh goal conceded this season secured victory.

The Reds came second

Liverpool are only one of two teams to have won all three Champions League games so far. The other is Aston Villa, who are currently top of the table on a better goal difference to the Reds.

Liverpool are in second place and Manchester City are in third place. So far, the English teams have dominated this new phase.

“Liverpool were disjointed,” says Warnock

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock spoke on MOTD: UEFA Champions League and claimed that Liverpool’s performance was “disjointed” and they “came away with a win”.

He said: “Along with the defeat to Nottingham Forest, it was the most disjointed Liverpool performance I have seen this season, but they got away with it unscathed.”

“It will be interesting to see what Arne Slot says in his post-match interviews because he is usually very honest about how well his team played.”
