He told Digital Spy: “These things [usually] come in threes. If there is to be a new one – and it depends heavily on the success of each individual, so you can’t rely on it ever happening again – each one must be as if it were the last.

“But I think it’s really important when you go into something and think one, two and three are the same… same story, same movie, make a third out of nothing.

He added: “There has to be some continuity in a third, a fourth and a fifth, and if someone says ‘no’ that’s fine. Let it go and move on to something else.”

Tom Hardy will of course be back and he has once again joined a host of big names.

This time’s cast includes Ted Lasso actress Juno Temple and 12 Years a Slave star/Marvel alum Chiwetel Ejiofor, who play a scientist and a soldier conducting research on symbiotes in Area 51, respectively.

Meanwhile, in House of the Dragon, Rhys Ifans plays Martin, an alien enthusiast whom Eddie and Venom meet along the way, and Andy Serkis – who directed the previous installment – has joined as the voice of Knull, the symbiote’s creator.

There are also a few returning faces, including Stephen Graham’s Patrick Mulligan and Michelle Williams, who will shine as She-Venom. The star had little more than a cameo appearance in Let There Be Carnage, but when the first film came out she said she was keen to explore more of Anne Weying’s alter ego as the equally unhinged variant of Venom would.

The other main actors considered for a comeback are Stephen Graham’s Patrick Mulligan and Peggy Lu as supermarket owner Mrs. Chen, but this time there’s no room for Michelle Williams as Venom’s ex-fiancée Anne.
