Mai Sakurai on being Giulia’s final Marigold match, facing Sareee

Mai Sakurai on being Giulia’s final Marigold match, facing Sareee

Mai Sakurai recently spoke about how it was Giulia’s last singles match in Marigold and that she wants to face Sareee and more. Sakurai spoke with Fightful’s Scott Edwards for a new interview. You can see the highlights below:

When exiting STARDOM for Marigold: “I owe a lot to Mr. Rossy Ogawa. And I wanted to help him with his new organization. I also wanted to improve as a wrestler and strive for even greater heights. To achieve this, I wanted to change my environment. Unlike the previous organization, where everything was already in place, this organization has to be created from scratch, which takes a lot of energy and entails a lot of difficulties. But it’s also very rewarding and I definitely feel more ambition, a sense of urgency and a sense of responsibility than before, so I think it’s a positive environment for me at the moment.”

About Giulia in her last Marigold match: “I was very happy that she chose me as her final opponent, but at the same time I felt a lot of pressure. This match was the best match of my entire career; It was a day I will never forget. Since then, many people have told me that I have changed. Until then, if I had said that I wanted to achieve higher goals, people would have laughed at me and I think they would have thought it was impossible. Giulia always respected my feelings and believed in me. I was able to fully demonstrate that in this match. I think I was able to demonstrate this strength because my opponent was Giulia. I am very grateful.”

What she learned from Giulia: “I learned to appreciate the fighting spirit. I want to win at everything and I bring that feeling of frustration into my games. Giulia was very strict, so I was always getting into trouble. Tamu-san, on the other hand, is very nice. Because she is friendly, I end up taking advantage of her kindness. But I think my personality is more suited to being scolded than praised, so perhaps Giulia’s style of teaching suited me better.”

About the first TwinStar champion with MIRAI: “We’re excited to see challengers come out one after the other for whatever reason and want to challenge us for the tag team belts. That’s why we always want to defend the belts and build our defensive record, and as champions we want to shine with these belts. And we, the “MiraiSaku” tag team, want to do different things and steal the spotlight as the number one tag team in the women’s pro wrestling world.”

When I faced Sareee: “A match with Sareee is a match I want to have. I came to Marigold because I wanted a fight like that, so I was happy to fight. But I’ve been told a lot of things that frustrate me, so I want to share them all one day.”
