Huawei AI chip possibly made by TSMC, triggering US export control probe: Report · TechNode

Huawei’s most advanced AI accelerator chip, the Ascend 910B, may have been manufactured by TSMC, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters after technology research platform TechInsights dismantled the product. If TSMC was found to be involved, the company may have violated U.S. export controls, and its possible involvement prompted the U.S. Department of Commerce to launch an investigation into the issue. Due to US sanctions against Huawei, TSMC has been banned from producing chips for the Chinese technology giant since September 2020. In a statement on Monday, TSMC said it had proactively contacted the US Department of Commerce regarding this matter. “We are not aware at this time that TSMC is the subject of an investigation,” the company said. TechInsights, which has not yet published its report, declined to comment. [Reuters]
