1970s songwriter Saffron Walden’s “disco classic” is released

1970s songwriter Saffron Walden’s “disco classic” is released

A songwriter has seen a “disco classic” finally released, 50 years after he wrote it.

Mark Wesley wrote “One Step (After Another)” in the 1970s when he was working as a DJ at Radio Luxembourg, but it remained on the shelf because he felt no one wanted to hear “cheesy” music anymore.

However, Mr Wesley, from Saffron Walden, Essex, offered the song to local band Miss Disco, who have now released it as their debut single.

The song was even recommended by Strictly Come Dancing judge Craig Revel Horwood said on Facebook: “I think it’s fabulous – a disco classic if there ever was one.”

Mr. Wesley wrote a number of songs in the 1970s, later produced advertising jingles and has also written several novels.

But he said the mood in the music industry changed after he wrote “One Step (After Another)” in 1974, and he realized no one was ready to accept it.

“There comes a point where you have to say, ‘I give up – this is going nowhere, no one wants this,'” he said.

“Life goes on.”

But two years ago, Mr. Wesley approached the seven-piece band, which plays popular songs from the 1970s and early 1980s, to see if they wanted it.

“There is no one but Miss Disco who can do this song justice,” Mr. Wesley said.

Sue Darwar, the band’s lead singer, said: “It had ‘disco classics’ written all over it.”

“It’s so catchy – we all loved it.”
