Kasatkina didn’t let fatigue bother her in Tokyo this week as she fought her way to the quarter-finals in her opening match against American McCartney Kessler. The Russian weathered the storm and saved five of nine break points in the game.

Kasatkina scored three aces and three double faults and scored 72% of first serve points. She won 67% of first serve points (38/57) and only 27% of second serve points (6/22). She converted seven of twelve break points.

Meanwhile, Sofia Kenin won a thrilling encounter against lucky loser Clara Tauson in the first game of the day. Kenin, who had never won a match in Tokyo in the past, picked up her second straight win at the tournament this week and reached an unlikely quarterfinal.

The American number 155 in the world rankings needed almost three hours of play to prevail 6-7, 6-4, 7-6. Kenin fended off 22 aces from Tauson’s racket and broke the Dane while serving in the deciding set to make the score 4-5. This is only Kenin’s 12th win this season.

While Kenin will no doubt have much fun attacking Kasatkina’s weaker second serve, the Russian’s agility appears to be unaffected by the long and tiring week in Ningbo.
