Record warmth returns today

Record warmth returns today

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – It’s a chilly Thursday morning with waking temperatures in the 40s and 50s, but strong, gusty winds from the south will push our temperatures to record highs this afternoon. If we reach 89 degrees in Wichita, it will equal the record high temperature set in 1939.

A line of showers and storms will form along the Kansas Turnpike around 7 p.m. and then move eastward throughout the evening. While widespread storms are not expected, one or two storms may be severe, causing heavy rain, frequent lightning and small hail.

After a calm and cooler Friday and Saturday with near-normal temperatures in the upper 60s and lower 70s, warmer weather quickly returns on Sunday and Monday as high temperatures climb into the lower to mid 80s.

A strong storm system with strong winds on Monday and Tuesday, followed by showers/storms and much cooler temperatures on Wednesday, appears to be a sure thing. While the exact details such as strength and timing are still somewhat uncertain, the weather should calm down in time for Halloween.
