Skippers, Crusaders highlight freshman states

The RIIL cross-country tournament season began on Monday, and first up was the Freshman Championships.

At Smithfield’s Deerfield Park on Saturday, the NK boys (38 points) finished second only to Hendricken (26 points) and the NK girls finished fifth (90 points).

NK’s Xavier Baker (14:08.93) and Colton Orr (14:13.03) placed fourth and fifth individually in the boys’ race, followed by teammates Henry Mather (eighth, 14:25.17) and Jagger Viens ( 10, 14:28.65). , Byron Flippin (11th, 14:30.46) and Camden Florio (13th, 14:31.62). Finnish Harrington of Prout led all Crusaders in 14:31.03, finishing 12th. Erik Dahl passed the Rebels in 14:36.64 for 15th place.

The Prout freshman girls had a good day on the track with four good finishes, although they didn’t have a fifth Harrier to qualify for the team championship. Emma Silva led the way in 15th place with a time of 17:44.6. Anna Jelinek (25th, 18:54.11), Lia Wendoloski (27th, 19:02.19) and Elin Macera (36th, 19:29.84) followed for the Crusaders.

The NK girls were led by Riley Morrison in 16th place with a time of 17:47.31. Hannah Place finished 35th in 19:17.31. Kara Donigan of South Kingstown was the lone Rebel competitor, finishing 37th in 19:33.03. Addyson Arnoux was the only Narragansett runner to compete, finishing 58th in 21:26.42.

Next up in the cross country season are the class championships, which will take place at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ponaganset High School.

Broad Rock shows off at the CX middle school state championship

Broad Rock Middle School placed third in the boys race and sixth in the girls race at the Rhode Island Middle School Cross Country State Championships held Sunday at Deerfield Park.

Jackson Domack, a seventh-grader, had the top finish among cross-country runners, taking third place in the boys’ race in 10:17.59. Henry LaPerle of Wickford was close behind in seventh place at 10:45.39.

Kennedy Kirwan led the girls’ placings, finishing 12th in 11:55.02.

Prout volleyball wins decisive victory

A few weeks ago, the South Kingstown girls volleyball team earned a remarkable victory over La Salle that made the Rebels a Division I playoff contender. Last Thursday, Prout did the same.

The Crusaders defeated the Rams 3-1 at Prout Gym. The Crusaders had a record of 11-5 at the time, but had played a relatively easy schedule with four wins over D-II opponents. La Salle, ranked No. 4 in the RPI standings, was a quality opponent. With the win, Prout moved up to No. 5, passing South Kingstown and East Greenwich.

SK football remains perfect in D-II play

South Kingstown remained perfect in Division II play Friday, beating East Providence (3-3) by a convincing score of 35-6.

The Rebels scored 35 straight points while shutting down the Townies until the fourth quarter, but a pick-six with a batted ball at the line of scrimmage ruined the visitors’ fun.

The Rebels improved to an overall record of 5-1, losing only to DI Cranston West in Week 5. SK has a significant lead over the top seeds in D-II, with games against Shea (1-4) and Lincoln (3-1) scheduled the next two weeks to end the regular season.
