Double Trouble: Reviews of M-Tennis/F-Golf Tournaments

Double Trouble: Reviews of M-Tennis/F-Golf Tournaments

We had a few different teams in competition earlier this week: the men’s tennis team traveled north to Seattle to compete in the ITA D1 Northwest Regional Championships, while the women’s golf team traveled to Oklahoma City to compete in the Jackson T. Stephens Cup . So, without further ado, let’s start with the ladies.

The Ducks got off to a hot start on Monday, finishing the first day of the tournament atop the leaderboard, one shot ahead of the South Carolina Gamecocks. Oregon was led by sophomores Kiara Romero and Darae Chung, who both posted top-five performances on the day, with Romaro finishing 2nd (E) and Chung tied for 5th (+6). On Day 2, the Ducks showed the same outstanding play and ended the day still on top, behind (you guessed it) Romero (E), Chung+3) and newcomer Tong An, who had a great day and ends with one -2. They played for the tournament championship against Arkansas on Wednesday, and oh boy, it came down to the wire. After Chung and Karen Tsuru put two points on the board, the game was tied after 17 holes between Romaro and Arkansas freshman Natalie Blonien until Blonien sank a long birdie putt on the 18th to give the Razorbacks the win. Still, it’s a fantastic performance from the Ducks that they can be proud of. Next up is a trip to Atlanta to compete in the East Lake Cup Oct. 28-30.

Now to the men. The men’s tennis team sent seven members to Seattle to compete in singles at the Northwest Regionals and then another five pairs to compete in doubles. Matthew Burton, Vlad Breazu and Zian Vanderstappen all made it to the 2nd round of the individual competition in straight sets, but unfortunately Burton and Vanderstappen each failed there in straight sets. Vlad Breazu would advance to the round of 16 before losing in three sets to Dzianis Zharyn of Washington. The individual tournament would ultimately be won by Carl Emil Overbeck of UC Berkley. In doubles, the Ducks fielded Russell Soohoo/Clement Lemire, Zian Vanderstappen/Matvey Greschner, Matthew Burton/Lenn Luemkemann, Vlad Breazu/Lachlan Robertson and Cooper Errey/Paris Pouatcha. Errey/Pouatcha fell 5:8 in round one. Vanderstappen/Greschner (4-8) and Soohoo/Lemire (1-8) were eliminated in round 2, while Breazu/Robertson (5-8) and Burton/Luemkemann (7-8) were both eliminated in the round of 16. The doubles championship was ultimately won by Nicholas Godsick and Samir Banerjee from Stanford won. The Ducks have about a week off before traveling to California to compete in the Jack Kramer Invitational.
