Fils beats Martinez and moves into the quarterfinals

French number 7 seed Arthur Fils reached the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors by defeating Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero 7-5, 6-3 in Basel.

Fils, ranked 20th, will next face Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas, the No. 3 seed.

The 20-year-old Frenchman beat German qualifier Daniel Altmaier (7-6 (5), 6-3) before his win.

In the preliminary round of the Basel tournament, Martinez Portero, number 39, won against Jiri Lehecka (6-2, 6-2).
