The Arsenal legend is urging Mikel Arteta to bring in the teenage sensation against Liverpool

The Arsenal legend is urging Mikel Arteta to bring in the teenage sensation against Liverpool

Arsenal face a major Premier League test on October 27 when they host league leaders Liverpool.

The Gunners welcome Arne Slots frontrunner to the Emirates Stadium for a thrilling showdown after losing at Bournemouth in the season’s top flight last weekend.

Arteta’s side bounced back to beat Shakhtar Donetsk 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League midweek, while Liverpool were victorious away at RB Leipzig.

However, the Spanish coach will be forced to make changes against his rivals, with William Saliba serving a one-match ban and captain Martin Odegaard still out injured.

Riccardo Calafiori will also be sidelined after hobbling against Shakhtar with a knee injury, but Arteta is confident Jurrien Timber is ready to step in and cover.

Positivity over Bukayo Saka’s return after missing out against Bournemouth and Shakhtar is a further boost for Arteta, but Wright wants him to be bold against Liverpool.

Wright claimed the starting midfield trio of Thomas Partey, Declan Rice and Mikel Merino was too conservative against Bournemouth and suggested Arteta should use 17-year-old Ethan Nwaneri against the Merseysiders.

“When I saw Merino, Partey and Rice, I thought of Nwaneri, the youngster,” Wright said on Sky Sports’ The Overlap podcast.

“Against Bournemouth you need someone who can do something [in the middle] and create something, because that was what was missing most.

“We needed someone to beat someone with the ball – I would have gone after him – I would have had Merino, Rice and Nwaneri in the starting lineup.” [the number 10]to have something else.

Arteta brought Nwaneri into the game in the final 10 minutes at Bournemouth when Arsenal were already 2-0 down, and he suggested he should be careful not to flaunt the teenager too much after the game.

Nwaneri has already made his breakthrough at Arsenal and will become the youngest player ever in Gunners and Premier League history in 2022 at the age of 15 years and 181 days.

However, despite the rave reviews of his promotion from the Hale End academy to the first team, he is yet to start in an EPL game and Arteta will carefully consider the situation ahead of the game against Liverpool.
