14-year-old Peoria vehicle theft suspect released from hospital after crash

PEORIA (25News Now) – A 14-year-old boy involved in a carjacking and crash with an Illinois State Police patrol car in September was released from the hospital Wednesday.

According to Peoria police, the boy was one of two juvenile suspects in the crime, the other suspect being a 15-year-old boy. This accident led to the fire department using the Jaws of Life to free one of the injured people.

Police said it all started around 10:20 p.m. Friday night when they responded to West Haymeadow Place for a report of a vehicle hijacking.

When officers arrived, the owner of the vehicle told police he was approached by two people wearing masks who took his vehicle and fled. Both were armed with handguns.

During the investigation, the vehicle was seen in the area of ​​Timberedge Drive and Orange Prairie Road. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, it sped away.

While fleeing, the vehicle crashed on War Memorial Drive and the ramp to eastbound I-74.

According to police, the 14-year-old suspect was arrested at the scene of the accident. The other suspect and the alleged driver of the stolen vehicle fled the scene. He was later arrested in the area of ​​the accident and identified as a 15-year-old male.

Both were taken to the hospital for injuries that are not considered life-threatening.

In addition, during a search of the youth’s trajectory, police found both a firearm at the scene of the accident and another handgun with an extended magazine.

The 14-year-old was arrested on charges of aggravated weapon abuse, possession of a firearm under the age of 21, armed robbery and armed vehicle theft.

The 15-year-old was arrested on numerous charges including aggravated fleeing and evading, speeding, reckless driving, aggravated weapons abuse, possession of a firearm under the age of 21, armed robbery, armed vehicle robbery, obstruction and multiple traffic violations.

Peoria police said both will be taken to the juvenile detention center after they are medically released from the hospital.

During the incident, Illinois State Police responded to assist Peoria Police. During the operation, an ISP vehicle was involved in a collision with another vehicle near War Memorial Drive and West Scenic Drive.

State Police said the trooper conducting the chase entered the intersection at the aforementioned location when another car in front of them entered the intersection, causing the patrol car to strike the other vehicle.

According to state police, the trooper and the driver were taken to local hospitals. According to Peoria Police, those involved in this accident were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

A statement from the Peoria Fire Department said firefighters used Jaws of Life to remove one of the injured people from the wrecked vehicle.

Peoria police said Illinois State Police are conducting the crash investigation.

Photos posted on the Peoria Area Scanner & Dashcam Facebook page showed significant damage to the patrol car and a passenger car.
