Cary NC shooting | Heavy police presence after shooting near Village Square in Cary

CARY, N.C. (WTVD) — A person was shot Thursday afternoon near the Village Square shopping center in the 600 block of Walnut Street in Cary.

The victim suffered injuries that police said were not life-threatening.

An initial report from Cary police said two people had been shot, but in an update, Cary Police Chief Terry Sult said there was a gunshot victim after officers initially responded to an “active shooter incident.”

Sult said there was no active shooter and several “persons of interest” were being detained for questioning.

“A few weapons” were confiscated, the chief added. Drones were used to search for suspects and secure the crime scene.

As officers investigated, backpacks and shoes could be seen on the ground behind caution tape.

Police said they believe the shooting occurred on the street right at the intersection of Cary Towne Parkway and Walnut Drive.

“Based on the information we currently have, which is subject to change, we believe this is an incident between known parties,” Sult said. “And so it wasn’t a random or active shooter situation.”

Lockdowns have been lifted at Adams Elementary School and East Cary Magnet Middle School. Police said the schools were not involved in this incident. All schools are now under Code Green, which essentially means school operations are back to normal.

A few witnesses told ABC11 that there were many teenagers in the parking lot of the Harris Teeter, a popular hangout spot. They said they saw some fights break out but didn’t expect any shots to be fired.

“It’s kind of a weird position…it was kind of a shock,” a Cary High School student tells ABC11.

In a video recorded by an eyewitness, teenagers were seen running and six or seven shots were heard.

Investigators interviewed possible witnesses, including students.

Walnut Street from Cary Town Boulevard to Maynard remains closed and police are asking motorists to avoid the area.
