Scranton Prep and Abington Heights negotiate in Hershey – Scranton Times-Tribune

Abington Heights’ Amishi Amit won at No. 3 singles against New Oxford at Birchwood Racquet Club in the first round of the PIAA team tournament.

District 2 champions Scranton Prep and Abington Heights continue their state playoff duties at the Hershey Racquet Club.

On Friday, defending Class 2A champion Scranton Prep (18-2) will face District 10 champion Cathedral Prep (15-3) in the quarterfinals at 9:30 a.m. It’s a rematch from last season’s semifinals. Abington Heights (17-2) will play District 7 champion Mount Lebanon (16-4) in the Class 3A quarterfinals at 4 p.m., with the semifinals scheduled for Saturday.

Scranton Prep won its fifth straight playoff game in the first round. The Classics stormed to a 5-0 victory over District 11 champion Allentown Central Catholic. Lily Lengyel, Alyssa Wigley and Emma Cuck won their singles matches in straight sets and improved to 5-0 in state singles matches over the last two seasons. Doubles teams Ella Cohen and Grace Devine and Hannah LaCoe and Nicole Krakovich also won in straight sets.

Scranton Prep’s singles players built on their impressive career record.

Lengyel has a 54-6 record in two seasons and Wigley, the two-time Times-Tribune Player of the Year, has a career record of 84-5. Cuck is undefeated at 56-0. Lengyel and Wigley are the Class 2A District 2 champions.

Cathedral Prep defeated Hampton, the third-place team from District 7, 5-0. Sophomore Paige Patsy, junior Finleigh Handzel and senior Sophia Glance won in straight sets. Patsy defeated Handzel 6-0, 6-3 to win the District 10 singles championship. Handzel teamed with Glance to win the District 10 dual championship.

Last season, Scranton Prep defeated Cathedral Prep 3-2. Lengyel defeated Handzel 7-5, 6-2, while Cuck beat Patsy 7-5, 6-2 at No. 3 singles. Wigley won No. 1 singles and led the Classics.

Abington Heights advances to the Class 3A quarterfinals for the first time since 2014.

Amishi Amit earned a win on the No. 3 singles and doubles teams of Mary Booth and Sammy Rosenstein, and Bernie Mullin and Elsie Phillips were victorious for the Lady Comets in a 3-2 victory over New Oxford, District 3’s second-ranked team, in the first round at Birchwood Racquet Club.

Susan Arp, the District 2 Class 3A champion, and Sona Hanumali, who teamed with Booth to win the District 2 Class 3A doubles title, will play No. 1 and No. 2 singles for Abington Heights. Arp has a career record of 70-9 and is 18-3 this season, while Hanumali is 47-9 in three seasons.

Mount Lebanon defeated Hempfield, the fourth-ranked team from District 3. Juniors Jackie Tang and Michelle Yang won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, and senior Elena Tatel won at No. 3 singles. Also, doubles teams Sylvie Erikson and Sarah Stroh and Alejandra Garcia and Maggie Meehan won.

Jackie Tang reached the District 7 quarterfinals and teamed with Michelle Yang to win the District 7 Class 3A doubles title.
