Pan de Muerto is a Day of the Dead staple and is made fresh year-round at this family-run bakery

MONTEBELLO, Calif. – Chapala Bakery, a family-run bakery passed down through multiple generations, is known for its delicious Pan de Muerto, a traditional Mexican sweet bread especially enjoyed on the Day of the Dead. While the bakery makes pan de muerto year-round, its production increases significantly in the weeks leading up to the holiday, when families and friends come together to honor their loved ones.

“We definitely see a lot of demand in October and November,” said Daniella De la Torre, who runs Chapala Bakery in Montebello, California. “The different versions we sell are those that only contain sugar or those that contain sesame seeds.”

“Food is important to any holiday,” said local resident Jovita Escobar. “Our favorite thing to eat at Thanksgiving is turkey. Hispanics like to eat tamales at Christmas. And for Dia de los Muertos, you can definitely have your Dia de Los Muertos bread.”
