Nick Lacour, WDAM 7 StormTracker, visits Petal for Community Helper Career Day

PETALT, Miss. (WDAM) – Petal School District educators are committed to educating young minds.

On Thursday, educators invited a member of the First Alert Weather Team, Nick Lacour, to join people who have dedicated their lives to a form of public service.

Dozens of the Pine Belt’s youngest residents not only learned what it means to be an essential worker, but also what to do when life-threatening conditions can or do occur.

One of the local educators at this event was Debbie Kreiser.

“We try to teach our littlest panthers here in Petal who can help them if they have a problem of any kind,” Kreiser said. “We have the fire department, the police, the ambulance, the road maintenance officer and of course (Lacour).

“So we try to help them figure out who to call if they need help.”

The Junior Panthers learned the importance of how weather affects them in everyday life and the importance of being aware of the weather when storms are brewing on the horizon.

The children were also shown how all of the event’s professions can be interrelated.

Niqueria McCullum also attended the event as a representative of the Oasis Training Center.

“(Thursday) was exciting getting the kids out to learn about their community development,” McCullum said. “I think it’s great that (they) organized this event to give (the children) an opportunity to learn more information about their community.”
