Texas, cowboys and cacti: Douglas Friedman brings a…

The Douglas Friedman x Lobmeyr collection.

Esteemed photographer and Wallpaper* contributor Douglas Friedman has a flair for striking images, and his latest adventure into the world of glassmaking demonstrates a similar flair. After working with the Viennese master glassmakers at Lobmeyr, Friedman was playfully inspired by the Wild West of America and presented six mugs and a carafe with hand-painted illustrations and motifs.

The collection, available exclusively at Abask, combines an unusual combination of centuries-old craftsmanship with Texan-inspired contemporary and playful design – a tightrope walk of sophisticated elegance and whimsical charm that Friedman and Lobmeyr carefully and beautifully balance.

The Marfa, West Texas-based photographer was inspired by his Friedman Ranch and his tattoo art, telling Wallpaper*, “I always feel inspired when I’m there.” It’s the place where I relax and have fun. “I am constantly inspired by the area, from the sweeping cloud formations that create the view outside my window to the iconic motifs and emblems of the area, which we have adapted with a wink for this collection.”

The illustrations include many dynamic movements from scorpions to horses to a friendly-faced cowboy. Throughout the design process, Lobmeyr’s Leonid and Louise Rath helped Friedman narrow down the selection. “I wouldn’t say there were any challenges, it was a very enjoyable collaboration from start to finish,” Friedman said. “After coming into contact with Leonid Rath (sixth generation glassware master) and Louise Rath (artist and illustrator) from Lobmeyr, I started creating moodboard motifs and they selected the ones that would translate best when they looked hand-painted on glass by their artisans.” . They have 200 years of experience in this field, so I felt very safe in their hands.”

With centuries of glassmaking experience, it’s no surprise that Lobmeyr has been a leader in the world of glassware made from hand-blown, cut, engraved and polished pieces since 1823. He is no stranger to collaborations and worked with Thomas Edison to create the first electric chandelier in 1883.

As the new primetime collection rolls out for the upcoming entertainment season, Friedman is ready to cozy up to his ranch and host guests, saying, “[You can use the collection] always and every day. I use mine for freshly squeezed orange juice in the morning, water next to my bed in the evening, and for champagne and cocktails whenever I have guests over. They are very suitable for any occasion.”

Working in a new medium was a “similarly creative process of collaboration, imagination and striving for a beautiful end product,” Friedman said. The entire collection proves that this is not their first rodeo for both Friedman and Lobmeyr.
