A house fire in Salt Lake County left several people injured, including several first responders.

The fire broke out Thursday afternoon in a duplex near 6000 South and 2100 East in Holladay.

According to the Unified Fire Authority, eight people were injured, including two residents, two police officers and a firefighter.

A neighbor’s video showed black smoke pouring from the roof of the house. It’s the same smoke that Sophie Payne saw as she left her home nearby.

“I just rang my neighbor’s doorbell and called 911 because there was a really strong smell and the smoke was getting darker,” Payne said.

Another neighbor said there were two women and two small children living in the house and they were all able to get out, but for some reason one of the women went back in and couldn’t get back out.

The neighbor told 2News they tried to rush to help, but the smoke was too heavy. When the police got there, they tried the same thing.

“They tried to get in and intervene, but the smoke was a little too heavy and they were pushed out,” said Benjamin Porter with the Unified Fire Authority.

Five police officers were treated at the scene for various injuries.

When firefighters got there, they were able to go in and rescue the person inside.

“We live by the motto: ‘We will risk a lot to save a lot,'” Porter said.

Two residents and a firefighter were also injured.

“I saw them pushing people out,” Payne said.

A neighbor said he saw someone performing CPR on the victim.

“This is a criminal investigation,” Porter said.

Firefighters were on scene for a few hours but eventually left, and Unified Police Forensics and Mobile Crime Lab remained on scene for a few more hours.

The house was expected to be a total loss.

A total of eight people were displaced between the main house and the neighboring house.
