Florida is suing the Justice Department for dropping its investigation into a federal assassination attempt 1290 WJNO

Florida has filed a lawsuit against the Justice Department after the state was ordered to close its investigation into the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in September.

Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody filed the complaint against Attorney General Merrick Garland after the DOJ ordered the state to suspend its investigation until a federal probe was completed.

According to the lawsuit, Florida has the right to investigate violations of state law and any delay could affect the outcome of a prosecution.

“Florida sues to protect its sovereign interest in investigating violations of state law because delay can affect the outcome of a prosecution,” the lawsuit states.

“Every day that Florida is prevented from investigating, it becomes more difficult to prove the state’s case in court,” the lawsuit continues. “In contrast, the federal government suffers no harm from Florida investigating federal crimes because the state has no intention of interfering with or obstructing federal investigations.”

Ryan Routh, 58, was arrested in September after Secret Service allegedly found him with a gun at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach.

Routh pleaded not guilty to all federal charges on September 30.
