The Orange County Sheriff’s Office releases bodycam footage of a fatal shooting of a police officer

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orange County Sheriff’s Office released body camera footage Thursday that showed a fatal officer-involved shooting last month.

According to the sheriff’s office, a woman called 911 around 4:30 a.m. on Sept. 21 and said her boyfriend – a man in his 40s – was armed with a knife and threatening to kill himself.

“Several moments later, officers arrived at the InTown Suites at 1951 Central Florida Parkway and encountered the man who had a knife,” the OCSO said in a statement posted on X, formerly Twitter.

Before the shooting, the woman can be heard begging the officers not to shoot the man.

“Don’t hurt him, don’t hurt him. “Please don’t do this,” a woman can be heard saying as a police officer pointed his gun at the man standing in the doorway of the motel.

“Don’t do it,” one MP can be heard saying. “Drop the knife, man. We’ll help you.”

“We just want to talk, man. “You are not in trouble,” said another MP.

But the sheriff’s office said officers were forced to fire after the man charged at them with the knife.

“The man went back to his room and our officers were in the parking lot trying to get him to come out without the knife so they could get him the help he needed. After approximately 20 minutes, the man came out, held the knife above his head and ran toward our deputies, who fired their service weapons, striking the man,” the OCSO statement said.

Authorities said officers rendered aid to the man until firefighters arrived at the scene and transported him to a hospital, where he later died.

“The video is being released in accordance with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office policy for the release of video recordings during critical incidents,” the OCSO statement said. “The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.”
