15-year-old injured, teen in custody for shooting near high school :: WRAL.com

There will be extra security at Cary High School on Friday after a shooting left a 15-year-old injured.

A 17-year-old is in custody, according to Cary police, who said the teens were not Wake County students.

On Thursday around 2:30 p.m., officers responded to an active shooter in the 600 block of Walnut Street and placed four schools on lockdown.

“All of a sudden my son called to me screaming, ‘Mom! There’s been a shooting!’” Cary High School parent Norma Reaves said. “People started running and trying to get back to the school grounds because they didn’t know where to go.” They were waiting for their parents.

East Cary Magnet Middle School, Adams Elementary, Cary Elementary and Cary High School were placed on lockdown due to “police activity” in the area. Police said none of the schools were involved in the shooting and lockdowns have since been lifted.

The extra security at Cary High School on Friday was just a precautionary measure, the school said.

Officers believe the initial scene occurred on the street between Cary Town Boulevard and Walnut Street.

Sky 5 was over the scene Thursday afternoon as officers investigated. Police officers were seen walking and parking behind the Cary Village Square shopping center at the corner of Walnut Street and SE Maynard Road.

According to police, a 15-year-old was shot and suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

“It happened very quickly, very quick succession,” said Darian Turner, who witnessed the shooting. “It was like six shots [and] We saw him lying on the ground shot.

In a video shared with WRAL News, multiple gunshots can be heard.

Judy Crippen waited to pick up her grandson and his friends in the Dairy Queen parking lot on Walnut Street after Cary High School’s release at 2:30 p.m. She said she heard the shots nearby.

“I saw a lot of students near the Penn Station sub shop,” Crippen described. “My grandson and his friends said there were kids fighting in the middle of Walnut Street.”

There is no active danger to the population, the police said. At least two weapons were seized from the 17-year-old suspect.

Police said the victim and suspect knew each other. Because of their ages, police did not release the names of the two teenagers.

Although none of the teens were identified, Cary High School Principal Nolan Bryant told parents in an email that none of the teens were students in the Wake County Public School system.

During a Code Yellow lockdown, all students return to the building and remain there. Activities within the school continue as usual.

“The community really has nothing to fear at this point,” Cary Police Chief Terry Sult said in a briefing at 3:30 p.m. “We have narrowed down the crime scene and the areas we need to look for evidence [blocked] out of.”

Police said Walnut Street from Maynard Road to Cary Towne Boulevard will remain closed during the evening commute while police continue to investigate the scene.
