ALBERT LEA, Minn. (KTTC) – The Minnesota State Fire Chiefs Association named Albert Lea Fire Captain Trevor DeRaad Fire Chief of the Year.

DeRaad was nominated for the award by Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Laskowske.

“The department had several public fire risk reduction programs, but Trevor had the passion to pursue more,” Laskowske said in his nomination letter.

DeRaad has been a firefighter for 25 years, including 22 years with Albert Lea Fire Rescue. DeRaad has been captain since 2018.

Over the years, DeRaad has met with many different groups to raise awareness about fire code enforcement, fire safety practices at local businesses and fire safety in residential areas.

He also assisted firefighters with training on how to interact with students with special needs and started a life skills program to help students prepare for the real world.

“I would like to thank my crew and everyone at Albert Lea Fire Rescue because without their drive and vision none of this would be possible,” DeRaad said as he accepted the award.
