Alana Wheatley of Gothenburg, Nebraska, president of the tennis club, noted how many people used the city’s tennis courts near campus last year. She assumed there were people at CSC who had either played tennis competitively in high school or enjoyed the sport as a hobby. Aware that the college did not have a tennis team, Wheatley was encouraged to propose the formation of a tennis club at Chadron State. Coleton Bevins, associate director at Residence Life, is the club’s advisor.

The tennis club currently consists of approximately 15 members, including President Wheatley, Vice President Sierra Hicks of Paxton, Nebraska, Treasurer Maddy Brunssen of Waverly, Nebraska, Secretary Gracie Newton of North Platte, Nebraska and CAB representative Aubrey Barrett of Scottsbluff, Neb. Wheatley is pleased is looking forward to continuing to grow the club and hopes it maintains the momentum.

“We would like to expand our club and make this a fun way to learn and play tennis. We are excited to also involve the community in our club and spread the love of tennis among everyone,” said Wheatley.

The club plans to train on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5pm to 7pm. Wheatley and the rest of the club want to encourage learning skills and then practicing them in playful situations.

“Our main goal with these practices is for everyone to have the opportunity to practice their tennis skills in a positive atmosphere,” Wheatley said.

The Chadron State College Tennis Club will host its first event on Oct. 30 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the tennis courts north of High Rise. All CSC students are welcome to participate. The club encourages students to wear a Halloween costume at the event and play tennis with tennis club members.

The club plans to hold additional events this semester, weather permitting, and move events indoors where possible. Next semester, the club will host two tournaments, a singles and a doubles tournament, which will be open to both CSC students and the public.
