New Tesla Model Y vehicles spotted in China with design refresh

Several Tesla Model Y vehicles have been spotted in China wearing camouflage patterns – likely due to the upcoming design update.

After the Model 3 refresh was introduced last year, we expected a Model Y refresh to follow.

It started last year with a Reuters report that claimed Tesla was planning a Model Y refresh called Juniper in 2024.

Later, a Bloomberg report added that Tesla planned to release a Model Y refresh in “mid-2024.”

Tesla has put an end to rumors. Tesla and CEO Elon Musk have stated that Tesla has no plans to refresh the Model Y “this year.” It’s important to note that both Tesla and Musk specifically mentioned “this year” when trying to quash rumors of a new Model Y.

This led many to think that a refresh was on the way, albeit for early next year.

In fact, we started spotting camouflaged Model Y prototypes in California earlier this summer, and a recent leak revealed a few new design aspects that will go into the Model Y’s refresh.

Just recently, supply chain reports from China suggested production would begin in the first quarter of 2025, and a report earlier this week suggested Tesla would begin test production this week.

In fact, several new camouflaged Tesla Model Y vehicles were spotted in China this week:

As the camouflage suggests, the new Model Y is expected to feature new front and back-end designs.

The interior is expected to feature similar design updates to the new Model 3, such as a new ambient light bar, which has been confirmed by a leak. The leak also showed a red light bar between the taillights with a “Tesla” emblem in it.

Tesla is also expected to launch a new 7-seater version of the Model Y in China.

In recent years, Tesla’s new vehicles often go into production first at Gigafactory Shanghai, which again appears to be the case here, but the Model Y refresh is expected to be a global program.
