Second-year quarterback Bryce Young will return to the Carolina Panthers’ starting role in Week 8 against the Denver Broncos after Andy Dalton was injured in a car accident on Tuesday.

Dalton was with his family when the accident occurred, but everyone in the car was able to avoid a trip to the hospital immediately afterward. However, Carolina’s medical staff discovered during an examination later in the day that the veteran quarterback had sprained his thumb.

Dalton was unable to attend the Panthers’ Wednesday practice, and head coach Dave Canales announced after practice that Bryce Young would return as the starter under center.

“We will be checking on Andy every day until this weekend to see if we can qualify him as a trainer [No.] 2 [quarterback] on game day,” Canales told reporters Wednesday afternoon.

After the Panthers’ 40-7 loss to the Washington Commanders on Sunday, Canales told reporters that the team wanted to stay at Dalton despite the team’s four-game losing streak. The injury to the veteran quarterback forced the Panthers to change that plan.

Why is Bryce Young starting against the Broncos?

Young will once again assume starting quarterback duties after Dalton injured his thumb in a car accident on Tuesday. His matchup against the Broncos will be his first start since Week 2.

Canales told reporters Wednesday that everyone involved in the car accident was fine, but the veteran quarterback sprained his thumb. Dalton was unable to train on Wednesday, but will be evaluated over the course of the week to see whether he could possibly be a replacement for Young next matchday.
