2024 Mexican Grand Prix – Free Practice 2 F1 Results (Mexico City)

2024 Mexican Grand Prix – Free Practice 2 F1 Results (Mexico City)

An extended second training session at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez was overshadowed by a serious accident for Mercedes driver George Russell.

Carlos Sainz set the pace for Ferrari ahead of McLaren’s Oscar Piastri in the second practice session before the Mexico City Grand Prix.

George Russell’s crash raises concerns as Pirelli testing program is planned

The second training session was extended to 90 minutes to allow Pirelli to define a tire testing program to obtain further data on its compounds and constructions for 2025.

At the start of his performance drive with the C4 option tire, Mercedes driver George Russell lost control of his car in the second sector and crashed into the guard rails. Russell suffered an impact of more than 30 G, had to be examined at the medical center and has since been released as he is “physically fine”.

There were also problems at Red Bull, with Max Verstappen complaining that he was experiencing the same engine problems that limited his participation in FP1 – the team eventually took his car into the garage to carry out extensive work on the RB20.

After his accident in FP1, Williams’ Alex Albon was unable to return to the track due to the extent of the damage to his car.

As a result, neither of them was able to set a time and finished 19th and 20th at the end of the race on Friday.

While Sainz and Piastri set the pace at the front, VCARB’s Yuki Tsunoda finished third ahead of US GP winner Charles Leclerc in his Ferrari.

Lando Norris finished fifth for McLaren, while Kevin Magnussen continued Haas’ strong recent form, setting the sixth fastest time of practice.
