Duke drops five-set match against Miami

DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke volleyball team lost a hard-fought five-set game to Miami 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 20-25, 25-23, 11-15) in ACC volleyball play Friday night.

Miami’s Ariana Rodriguez recorded a triple-double to help the Hurricanes improve to 14-6 (5-4 ACC). The Blue Devils fall to 8-12 overall and 4-5 in conference play.

Dukes Kerry Keefe showed an all-around performance as a setter with 26 kills, 10 digs and three blocks Grace Penn provided 51 assists. Libero Mailinh Godschall the defense stepped in with 19 digs while Breonna Goss a total of four blocks added to the network.

Miami’s Rodriguez was outstanding with 12 kills, 24 assists, 16 digs and six blocks to lead the Hurricanes to victory.

How it happened

  • Duke took an early 1-0 lead as the team hit .419 save percentage and limited the Hurricanes to a .172 lead.
  • Both teams struggled offensively in the second set, but Miami managed just enough to tie the game at 1-1. Keefe led both teams with eight kills and a .353 hitting percentage, despite Miami’s eight blocks in the frame.
  • Miami took a four-point lead (19-15) in the third set, forcing the head coach Jolene Nagel to take her first break on set. Miami continued to put up points and eventually played with a .263 batting average and took a 2-1 lead.
  • The fourth set saw a match-high 12 ties and three back-and-forth lead changes. Freshmen Avery Hamlin and doctoral student Ariana White A total of six kills and no errors, giving Duke a nice spark off the bench to force a fifth set.
  • Miami achieved its best offensive efficiency in the fifth and final set, with eight kills and just one error on 20 swings, hitting .350. The Hurricanes also added two aces and two blocks to lead them to the win.

Notables

  • Duke has lost eight of its last nine meetings against Miami.
  • The all-time series increases to 17-16 in favor of Duke.
  • This is the first of two games against these two programs this year – they meet again on November 29th in Coral Gables.
  • Penn had 50 or more assists for the second time this season.
  • Five Blue Devils scored 10 or more digs.
  • Tiffany Paalman has started in two consecutive games in the absence of Rylie Kadel.
  • Duke recorded 12 service errors, the eighth time this season with double-digit errors.

  • Duke ends the weekend on Sunday against No. 19 Florida State.
