Freddie Freeman’s Walk-Off Grand Slam Video: The hobbled star wins World Series Game 1 for Dodgers with historic home run

Who needs two good ankles?

Freddie Freeman, still at least somewhat bothered by a season-ending ankle sprain that has kept him on and off the Dodgers’ roster this postseason, still had the moment of his career Friday night. The former MVP hit a first-pitch grand slam to right field to give Los Angeles a 6-3 victory in 10 innings over the Yankees in Game 1 of the World Series.

The walk-off home run represented a major emotional lift for both teams, as Alex Verdugo had given the Yankees a victory just a minute earlier with an incredible catch on a Shohei Ohtani pop-up. New York intentionally chose to move on Mookie Betts to get to Freeman, and Freeman made a rusty Nestor Cortes Jr. pay in the blink of an eye.

Here’s a look at Freeman’s walk-off grand slam and its historic standing.

Freeman, 35, can’t run particularly well due to his ankle problem, but running wasn’t necessary for this case.

One of the beauties of baseball is its history: The game has been played for well over a century, and yet on any given night you can see something no one has ever seen before.

Freeman’s blast would be the first walk-off grand slam in World Series history, which dates back to 1903. In fact, it’s only the second walk-off grand slam in postseason history. The first belonged to Nelson Cruz in the 2011 ALCS.

However, Grand Slams are not uncommon for Freeman. He entered Friday night with seven career Grand Slam wins, but No. 8 will eclipse all others given the circumstances.

Freeman has already won a World Series with the Braves in 2021, but if Los Angeles wins three more games, the defining moment of his career in Dodger blue will have arrived.
