Notorious serial killer caught in this Central Florida bar. Here’s what happened

VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla – A biker bar in Port Orange was once the haunt of a notorious serial killer.

Located on South Ridgewood Avenue, this spot – also called the Last Resort Bar – gained notoriety in the 1990s after Florida serial killer Aileen Wuornos was arrested while drinking a beer there.

Wuornos made headlines after she was convicted of seven murders in the state, making her one of the most notorious serial killers in U.S. history.

But on Jan. 9, 1991, undercover agents located Wuornos at the Last Resort Bar and took her into custody, according to an affidavit.

According to Wesley Brewer, who works at the Last Resort, Wuornos was a regular there and sometimes even stayed overnight.

“Every now and then, not every night,” Brewer explained. “It would be two or three nights a week.”

He added that Wuornos still sends mail to the bar — long after she was sentenced to death and executed by lethal injection in 2002 — although it is mostly magazines and subscriptions.

While Brewer was not at the bar at the time of Wuornos’ arrest, the bar’s founder – Al Bullings – was there.

He said that undercover police officers were drinking with Wuornos the night she was arrested and that there were many other stories that emerged from the arrest.

“About two years ago there was a policewoman; She parked a little further down the street to cover herself, and when she retired, she came and stayed all day,” Brewer told News 6. “She got drunk and said, ‘I was out that night, where she was arrested, here, but I never came.’ In!'”

These days, patrons and regulars still visit the bar and ask for a drink, even though the store has plenty of merchandise scattered around the store, including T-shirts and hot sauce.

And there is a wealth of evidence to support Wuornos’ influence.

Guests exiting the side back door find a morbid vigil dedicated to Wuornos, including information about her aliases, her birth name, and the men she killed.

Meanwhile, the bricks along the bar’s exterior wall are all painted with messages – many of which relate to the serial killer herself.

Two stones read: “Aileen Wuornos. I was raped.” This likely refers to Wuornos’ self-defense claims after her arrest, when she argued that her victims had either raped her or attempted to rape her. (Copyright 2024 by WKMG ClickOrlando – All rights reserved.)

There are numerous newspaper clippings in the bar detailing Wuornos’ story after her arrest.

The bar and Bullings were even featured during the filming of the 2003 film “Monster,” which retold the life of Wuornos (played in the film by actress Charlize Theron).

Just down the road is another infamous location associated with Wuornos.

Before her arrest, Wuornos was reportedly staying in Room 9 of a motel called The Fairview Inn at 5964 S. Ridgewood Ave.

However, the motel has since been purchased and renamed the Scoot Inn.

Despite the change, Wuornos’ room (now renumbered as Room 7) is still there, and brave guests can choose to stay overnight – assuming the room isn’t already in use.

News 6 tried to take a look inside, but there was already a guest staying there and the manager said he wasn’t sure when it would be available for viewing again.

While The Last Resort bar is busy during Bike Week and Biketoberfest, it remains open to customers all year round from 10am to 8pm all week long.
