2024 US Election Results Poll: US Election Results: These 15 Electoral College votes could decide polls for Kamala Harris and Donald Trump

Michelle Obama will meet Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in Michigan on Saturday at her first public campaign rally of this US election, while Republican candidate Donald Trump holds his own rally in the battleground state.

With about 8.4 million registered voters and 15 of the 270 Electoral College votes needed for victory, Michigan is one of seven competitive U.S. states that will decide the election. It is part of the “Blue Wall,” which, along with Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, is considered the Democrats’ best chance of electing Harris.

In Michigan, Harris and Trump are battling for voters that include a large Arab-American and Muslim population concerned about Israel’s war in Gaza and union members concerned about how electric vehicles could transform the U.S. auto industry that is headquartered in Detroit, the state’s largest city.

Former President Trump wooed auto workers by promising tax breaks on auto loans and a crackdown on Chinese car sales. Earlier this month, he made disparaging comments about Detroit, a majority-black city that has been criticized by Republicans for its crime rates, even as they have fallen significantly in recent years. He said of Harris: “Our whole country will end up like Detroit if she’s your president.”

Harris and Obama are expected to focus on the contrast between Harris and Trump on abortion rights, taxes, unions and tariffs. Harris’ rally will be in the southern city of Kalamazoo, while Trump’s will be in the Detroit suburb of Novi, about 130 miles (210 km) away. Harris leads Trump nationally by a narrow 46 percent to 43 percent, according to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll. In Michigan, Harris is ahead by even less — 47.6 percent to 47.1 percent, according to poll aggregator FiveThirtyEight. Democratic President Joe Biden, Harris’ boss, won Michigan by 150,000 votes against Trump in the 2020 election, a margin of less than 10 percent to 3 percent, while Trump won by 11,000 votes in 2016.

Since the 2020 election, Michigan implemented early in-person voting for the first time and began allowing jurisdictions with more than 5,000 residents to begin processing and tallying mail-in ballots eight days before Election Day on Nov. 5.

So far, 19.5 percent of registered voters in Michigan, or nearly 1.42 million people, have voted, the Michigan Secretary of State said Friday. Only 10,900 people had early in-person ballots, while the rest were returned mail-in ballots.
