Cuba hit by 6.8 magnitude earthquake: maps

Two strong quakes struck off the southern coast of Cuba on Sunday, according to the United States Geological Survey.

The larger magnitude 6.8 quake struck at 11:49 a.m. Cuban time about 24 miles south of Bartolomé Masó, Cuba, agency data shows. It shook the island about an hour after a magnitude 5.9 quake struck the same area.

People at the US Navy base at Guantanamo Bay felt at least three tremors or tremors on Sunday afternoon. No injuries or damage were reported there.

As seismologists review the available data, they can revise the reported magnitudes of earthquakes. Additional information collected could also prompt USGS scientists to update tremor severity maps.

Aftershocks in the region

An aftershock is usually a smaller earthquake that follows a larger earthquake in the same area. Aftershocks are typically minor adjustments along the portion of a fault that was displaced at the time of the initial earthquake.

When aftershock data is available, corresponding maps and charts include earthquakes within 100 miles and seven days of the initial quake. All times mentioned above are for Cuban time.
