Trump nominates South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem as Homeland Security Secretary in the new Cabinet

Donald Trump will reportedly announce South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem as his next Department of Homeland Security secretary.

The 52-year-old former vice presidential nominee is set to take the helm of the agency as Trump seeks to crack down on immigration, two sources told CNN on Monday night.

The congresswoman will oversee a $60 billion budget and thousands of employees at federal agencies, from U.S. Customs and Border Protection to Immigration and Customs Enforcement to the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the U.S. Secret Service.

It follows the reinstatement of Tom Homan, the former acting director of ICE, as the president-elect’s “border czar.” Trump also announced the appointment of immigration hardliner Steve Miller as his new deputy chief of staff for policy at the White House.

Noem’s reported appointment comes as Trump continues to fill the top positions of his new administration after securing re-election last week in the 2024 presidential election.

The Republican nominee crossed the 270 Electoral College vote threshold early Wednesday after clinching several crucial swing states.

Trump campaign co-chair Susie Wiles has been named the new White House chief of staff.

Trump has also named former New York Rep. Lee Zeldin to head the Environmental Protection Agency, in what is expected to be a major reshuffle.

On Sunday night, the president-elect confirmed New York Rep. Elise Stefanik as the new U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, branding her a “strong, tough and smart America First fighter” in a statement to the U.N. New York Post.
