Pete Alonso believes MLB should allow battles in hockey style

New York Mets First Baseman Pete Alonso took a page from Hockey's Playbook as he suggested a new rule proposal for MLB.

When Alonso, who made his fifth all-star appearance, spoke to the media before the game of 2025 MLB, Alonso suggested that the players should not be ejected to charge the hill or the fight. Instead, he believes that MLB should follow the style of the hockey, which tolerates the fights between players during the games.

“If there is a rule that I could change, I don't think people should be ejected after charging the hill or the fight,” said Alonso. “So I think it should be hockey style. No teams. No. Nothing. Then people can be seriously injured. If they go out the hill, they should be able, but if the pitcher, the pitcher or the hitter or whoever, if they don't want to fight, they don't have to fight and then do not have to fight.

Alonso was involved in several benches that delete incidents on his career. This includes when the Mets in 2022 faced the St. Louis Cardinals, and Alonso was downloaded from Cardinals First Base Coach Stubby Clapp.

If Alonso's pitch became a rule, it would intend to keep these fights on individual conflicts instead of including entire teams if the benches are clear. Although MLB is currently more geared towards other changes in the game, including potentially the automated ball strike system in 2026 on MLB, Alonso made his plea for the idea.
