New TSU survey: Most residents of Harris County consider crime as a serious problem

A TSU survey results in most residents of Harris County who see crime as a serious problem, while opinions continue to be divided to enforce immigration.

Harris County, Texas – a new survey published on Wednesday morning, offers a deeper understanding of how the residents of Harris County see the crimes and enforcement of immigration in their communities.

The Barbara Jordan Public Policy Research and Survey Center on the TSU carried out the survey from June 24th to July 3, 2025 and collected answers from 1,600 registered voters throughout Harris County. The participants represented all ethnic backgrounds, political affiliations and neighborhoods.

How serious is the crime in Harris County?

When asked how serious crime is in your neighborhood:

  • 54% said it was very serious
  • 34% said it was a little serious
  • 11% said it wasn't too serious
  • 1% said it was not serious at all

Experts point out that these perceptions are shaped by several factors, including the reaction of the local police to incidents and the persecution of cases.

“You need your police to appear. If your house is broken in when your car is broken in when your car is stolen. You need the department to be able to appear. You need the office of the DA to take a gambling? When the fingerprint is the outside of the car on the inside of the car.
Thomas Nixon, lawyer and former HPD officer

Implementation of immigration: Should the local police work together?

In the survey, public opinion on the enforcement of immigration and cooperation with the federal authorities was also examined:

  • 39% in view of the cooperation should be a case.
  • 38% said the police should always cooperate
  • 23% said the police should never cooperate

Cesar Espinosa, Executive Director von, said that fear plays a major role in the perspective of the law enforcement agencies in the migration behind apartments.

“People are afraid. People combine all law enforcement with ice or they think or they know based on personal interactions or what they have heard from their personal friends that they could end up with law enforcement authorities at the end of the day.

Why is that important

TSU researchers say that the goal of this survey is to achieve a clearer understanding of public opinions on crime, criminal justice and public security in Harris County. This is the first of two reports based on the data collected.
