How to prepare for the flood guard in Winnebago County

Oshkosh (NBC 26) – On Tuesday, the National Weather Service gave flood warnings and watches for a large part of Central Wisconsin, including Winnebago County. Emergency administrative officers say it is important to stay aware to go to safety.

  • NWS published a flood guard for Winnebago County on Wednesday.
  • Central Wisconsin was also on a level two for heavy storms.
  • Winnebago County sends emergency notifications with the Alertsse system and the Myalerets app.

Winnebago County is no stranger to flood, but that doesn't mean it is not dangerous.

“Always be prepared, it is better to be on the safe side than sorry,” said Eric Rasmussen, director of the emergency management of Winnebago County.

Rasmussen says, while the floods in the Winnebago district, typography, does not likely cause fall floods.

“We have no areas that are badly affected by the floods of falls and many of our waterways are controlled by the dam,” he said

However, there are still steps that you can take to protect yourself.

“Make sure you have several ways to get emergencies,” he says. “It is always a good time to ensure that your preparatory kit is up to date.”

He also says that your swamp pump works and does not drive on the streets with a standing water or don't go on streets.

“Do not pink endangered, turn around and find a different way,” says Rasmussen.

Every second counts in an emergency so that the city of Oshkosh is proactive.

“We will make sure that we are prepared as much as possible,” said Steve Gohde, deputy director of public work.

Gohde says

“You will look for rubble and try to get things out as much as possible.”

They also load trailers and vehicles with emergency floods and other flood equipment.

“It may be prepared and ready for a quick commitment,” said Gohde.

Gohde says, make sure that grass sections and waste do not clog the drainage of your street.

“This is a lot of it, it is easy that the water cannot get off the street, so it brings it on the street until it can go through these debris,” he said.
