The Hall of Famer and the Milwaukee Bucks -Legende Oscar Robertson added another award for his long list of awards at the Espys on July 16. This time, however, it was off the pitch for his work.

The MVP and the 12-time all-star from 1963-64 contributed to the Milwaukee-Bucks in 1971 to their first NBA championship.

Robertson was also the first player in NBA history to have a triple double in one season.

“The Big O” was recognized for his work as a pioneer to found a free agency in the NBA on July 16 at the Espys. There Robertson received the Arthur Ashe Award for courage. The award is awarded to a deserved member of the sports world that has made a difference beyond the field by fighting for what they believe and ultimately influences people worldwide.

While Robertson was a player, the NBA teams kept the rights of the players, even if their contracts have expired. Basically, the players in various teams were either through the trade or the release, since the free agency was rare.

Robertson became President of the NBA Players Association from 1965 to 1974.

In 1970 he submitted a antitrust law against the league to block the NBA ABA fusion and to free the players from exploitative contract restrictions. The owners threatened and released him and warned that the league would crumble under the weight of this new work force. Many players shy away from fighting and were worried that they would lose their work. Robertson continued and was aware that the current situation was unfair.

After a successful delay in the merger, the Player Association achieved a groundbreaking settlement with the league in 1976. It was considered the “Oscar Robertson rule”. The “rule” removed the clause “Option” or “Reserve” in the NBA uniform player contract. As already mentioned, the previous rules tied a player to a team for life at the team option. The players now had an impact on dealing with the owners. The “Oscar Robertson rule” has created what we now have as a “limited freelance agency. This paved the way for larger workers' gains in the street. MLB and NFL players soon won similar concessions.

The former recipients of Arthur Ashe Award for Courage include US gymnastics (2018), Bill Russell (2019), Kevin Love (2020), Maya Moore (2021), Vitali Klitschko (2022), the National Football team of the USA (2023) and Steve Gleason (2024).
