Man, who was killed in Black Knight Bow Benders Lightning Strike, identified as Robert Montgomery; 14 others hurt


Jackson Twp., NJ (WPVI) – One person is dead and more than a dozen others were injured on Wednesday in a lightning stroke in an archery area outdoors in Jackson Township, New Jersey.

The emergency crews were sent to Black Knight Bow Benders around 7 p.m., which are located on the 600 block of the Perrineville Road in Ocean County.

According to the Jackson Township police, 61-year-old Robert Montgomery from Cinnaminson died of his injuries. He was identified as a member of the range, said Gene Grodzki Gene Grodzki, head of the Black Knight Bow Benders.

Fourteen other suffered injuries, from burns to non -specific complaints not to feel good, the police said.

According to the police, the archery was organized at the location and participated by members of the Jackson Cub Scout Pack 204. The injured victims are between 7 and 61.

“Please pray for everyone who is involved in this tragic incident,” said the governor of New Jersey, Phil Murphy, in an explanation.

Michael Reina, Mayor of Jackson Township, told our sister station WABC-TV that he is deeply sad about the loss of life. He attributed the actions of rescue workers and said at least one of the victims had been revived with CPR.

According to Reina, eight of the victims are young people at the Boy Scout group.

Grodzki says he tried to help the hits. He even felt the current itself.

“It hit this tree. You can see where the roots are exposed under the tree. The dirt flew up, and one of the club members, a big guy like a 240 pound type, was thrown against the tree,” he recalled.

This is the 12th Lightning death of the year in the United States and the second in New Jersey. There have been 18 Lightning deaths in New Jersey since 2006.
