The open championship is often associated with damp conditions, cloudy sky, gentle hills, view of the coast and of course long grass.

Royal Portrush's Dunluce links are covered with a deep, adult swing, or as it is informally known, the “big stuff”. It is one of the characteristic challenges that competitors have to face when they want to raise the Claret jug.

Just keep it in Fairway, right?

It is not so easy and one of the best ball strikers in the world learned this in the difficult way in the opening round on Thursday.

Bryson Dechambeau's discount on the fourth hole of Par-4 found the Rough to the left of the Fairway, but his second shot recorded him even more when he buried his ball in the long grass about 40 meters in front of the green. A catastrophic side-hill lie did not help the matter, and Dechameau fully started on his fourth shot.

He finally did it for a double bogey after he needed two attempts to get out of the swing.

Dechameau, a member of LIV Golf and twice US open champion, was two holes shortly before noon on Thursday and six shots behind a four-way difference for the tour.
