Record Sioux Fall Snowfall in July?

Record Sioux Fall Snowfall in July?

Sioux Falls, SD (Kelo) – Snow in July?

This was reported by a record event report by the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls early Thursday morning.

The NWS report states to maximize a daily maximum snowfall for Sioux Fall for Wednesday, which breaks the record of 0 inches for July 9. You can find the full report below.

Scott Mundt and Brian Karsten from Keloland Meteorologist immersed a deep immersion in the record weather during a Keloland+ weather show on Thursday.

Karstens examined how snow records are kept and said that they are recorded all year round, even if the amount of snow is zero.

“The snowfall and the snow depth are occurred as zeros during the rainy season, unless there is hail and it is reported as a trace in the snow column because it is considered a frozen precipitation,” said Karsten. “A little Tidbit -Wetterwissen.”

Karsten added and looks back through the records, and the traces that the hail quantities are counted as not unprecedented.

“We look back on the weather documents who think that this has already been in the books and there are some T traces (traces), not as many as they might think,” said Karsten.

Both Karstens and Mundt were surprised by the small amount of hail in July and said that the NWS has collected data since the 19th century, but they don't see many traces of snowfalls or hail.

“I think about the number of days in the summer that I got in these years and reconciles that, it doesn't happen much, but did it happen once a year? Probably not,” said Karsten. “I had more than once in a few years, but then it would be technically a trace in the frozen column.”
