Disney Imagineering employs KI to initiate robotics progress


In 1952 Walt Disney was founded as a place where the inventor, engineers and designers were able to tinker, test and innovations with the latest technology and at the same time develop experiences and attractions for the Disney properties around the world. Nowadays it is no surprise that one of these areas includes artificial intelligence, which contributes to Disney's pioneering work in robotics.

In particular, imagineering uses a branch of the AI, which is referred to as reinforcement learning, which is effectively an area of machine learning that contains learned behavior. The first use of the Tech can be seen in Disney's charismatic BDX droids in Pint size, which imagine that the senior vice president of research and development, Kyle Laughlin, as a “huge leap to the front” for robotics and especially in “bring these beloved characters to life in the real world”.

For a pot story, mechanical creations of its iconic characters have long been a staple for Disney attractions. One of Newton's first uses is to promote the robot character platform behind the BDX droids. Laughlin confirms that Newton will be part of the next generation of robotics and characters of imagineering. “The BDX droids are just the beginning,” he says. “We have undertaken to bring more characters to life in a way that the world has not yet seen, and this collaboration with Disney Research, Nvidia and Google Deepmind is an essential part of this vision.”

In order to forward this initiative, the imagineering also organizes a close partnership with the Disney studios such as Lucasfilm and Visual Effects Innovator Industrial Light & Magic, which are involved in the BDX -Droid project. “It is this kind of creative spark and this cooperation with each other,” says Laughlin about the formula.

In fact, he reports that the BDX droids were actually inspired by a video game “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” before they brought to life and debuted in the Disney parks. Since then, the BDX droids have also made it to Hollywood, as they are supposed to appear in Jon Favreaus film “The Mandalorian and Grogu”, which is planned for the publication of theater combination on May 22, 2026. “This is only the beginning. The company plans to use more expressive, interactive characters in parks and cruise rails,” reports Laughlin, stating that this will be part of Disney's announcement of $ 60 billion in new attractions and expansion over the next few decades. “Our whole goal is to bring these characters to life faster than ever. And so artificial intelligence and reinforcement learning are important tools to drive this time frame down and to bring these characters to the guests as quickly as possible.”
