Finau has been shot at British Open, but he has the right attitude – Deseret News

Can Tony Finau prevail this week at the Open Championship in Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland?

Of course he can win something that he could not reach this season. And he has to play better than the events where he started admirable but was neglected.

He will need a great tournament with an elite ball and has to find some magic with his putter and wedge game.

All of this after taking some time to rest and give a new addition to the family.

“I think that with the new baby, which is five months old, Tony focused exclusively on Signature events and the majors,” said Bobby Casper, moderator of the real Golf radio.

“He came to Ireland early so that he could spend a few days to prepare for the British Open. The idea was to help with the course of the course and time.

“I saw him at the beginning of last week and he looked in a great atmosphere and said he played well. This should be a good course for him this week.”

The favorites are the No. 1 Scottie Scheffler in the world, the hometown of Northern Ireland -favorite Rory Mcilroy, who is freshly exhausted at the Scottish Open last week, and Liv Star Jon Rahm, a former champion.

Other top selections of Golf Digest and odds are Ludvig Aberg, Bryson Decombeau, Xander Schauffele and UK Stalwarts Shane Lowry, Tommy Fleetwood and Tyrrell Hatton.

Finau finished third at the British Open at Royal Portrush and was the low American behind the winner Lowry (17-uner) and the second-placed Finisher Fleetwood (9-Ander) with his 7-end-saving finish.

In an interview with the golf channel last spring, Finau said that he still had the testimony to win a major and to see his name high on the list of elite players. Before opening the Houston, Finau said: “I have the feeling that I just scratched the surface of what I can achieve in the game.”

In 2019 at Royal Portrush it was his best performance in a major up to this point in his career. He was the only player in the last 10 groups to fit on the Dunluce course par with the par on Sunday.

Portrush is known for its challenging landscape affected by the weather, especially winds. You can play three holes with the same wind direction and then be exposed to a completely different wind direction over the next three holes. Then there are another three holes in which you can see a completely different wind direction.

Such changing conditions force the players to adapt and become creative with their recordings. The 230-YARD-PAR-3 16. With a deep gorge on the right side of the green is called Calamity Corner and par is a coveted number of points.

This is a course in which the players can be insane. The desire to throw an association is understood.

After the 2019 efforts, Finau was enthusiastic about his performance, in which the Champion Lowry and Mcilroy know the layout by heart. His third place was a career highlight.

“I played under tougher conditions, but I didn't play better under these conditions than today,” Finau was quoted in Golfweek. He said the conditions at Portrush were the fourth largest he had faced in his career.

He described reporters what it took for his second last round at Portrush.

“The second shot on 11 on Saturday I met a perfect ride when it rises and blew. I had 206 front and 228 hole, so I pulled out my 2 iron, rained sideways and blew from the left and tried to hit a run there.”

Finau thought: “I love golf on the left. I wish I could play it more often. It takes so much creativity.”

Finau will need everything he expected this week with bad weather. Most experts say that the layout not only takes skills and imagination, but also a player with a good attitude that does not go down and discouraged – because there are bad shots on the menu.

During his career, Finau had a lot of adversity and lacked a few short putts when it was directed into disputes in the last round of the game. But his attitude has always presented a relaxed appearance, a relaxed attitude.

He will need a lot of it in Northern Ireland, that and his rain jacket.
