The commitment of the UF for the “institutional neutrality” will be their downfall

I remember exactly that in February 2023 I opened my acceptance letter at the University of Florida and felt proud. I have achieved my goal of entering the most prestigious school in the state and planned to attend a university that has made itself proud with its academics and diversity.

Over the years, however, I feel increasingly disappointed with what UF stands for. A look at his latest news can illustrate the cause of his slow, painful descent in the ranking.

While the strong political gap within this country existed long before this year, I would first like to draw attention to the Israel-Palestine protests that have had an impact on the effects of 2024.

Uf was no different.

I remember that I overturn demonstrators who campaigned for Palestine when I went west to the library. I soon heard about her arrest and the protests scurried. I was not surprised because Uf published an explanation that banned the ban on camps and was still formed. I assumed that this was the end – until I discovered the reaction of the former university president Ben Sasse on the protests.

He said the demonstrators said “ridiculous … ignorant things” and many of them were “stupid and repoded”. He finally resigned from his position, albeit for various reasons. Shortly afterwards it came to light that he unnecessarily issued hundreds of thousands of university money.

Months later, which really impressed me, was when a class paper of the UF Law School student only applies to white people.

In his newspaper entitled “National Constitutionalism” Preston Damsky wrote that all non -white people should revoke their protective measures entitled to vote. He received a book prize for the newspaper from his professor, an honor that was given to the best student in the class.

When the university was under fire, Merrit McAlister, the dean of the Faculty of Law, defended the actions of the professor and claimed that the professors “should not view any discriminatory visibility”.

Universities should practice “institutional neutrality”, he said when administrators do not take any positions on political issues.

The lack of consistency of the university is noticeable in this situation.

Damsky was allowed to use his white supremacist views that were committed to Eugenik and a strong anti-immigration policy. Despite his outrageous, constitutional positions, he was rewarded with the best possible designation of the students in the class.

In the meantime, Propalestine demonstrators, one of whom was charged with spitting on a police officer, were solved and called hard names by the former President of UF.

Why does the concept of the “neutrality” of UF only apply to certain points of view? Does the university practice neutrality at all?

In addition to his newspaper, Damsky published several anti -Semitic contributions on social media, which caused the university to ban him from the campus.

Before that, he described several anti-immigrant and anti-black ideals in his newspaper. UF officials only took up when they were used on social media and focused on a certain population group.

The inconsistent neutrality policy of UF becomes clear: discriminatory statements are not treated equally.

While the administration is inconsistent in the messages that they are ready, there is a point in the history where we have to draw a border between what we consider to be politics and an undeniable violation of human rights.

The university encouraged a hideous call to destroy the human rights of minorities to avoid that they deal with controversial questions. The message sent the message that racism and xenophobia are not only rewarded on campus, but also rewarded.

Despite the neutrality of claims, the government has taken a side that promotes fear and distrust on our campus.

When someone who was proud to take part in UF, I hope that we can move to a better future that celebrates our differences instead of ignoring them under the guise of “neutrality”.

Maybe it's great to be a Florida gator.
