The murder of Jason Corbett: a murder or self -defense? – Overview and analysis

In 2015, Jason Corbett was found dead in his house after two years after he was attacked by his wife and father -in -law. His injuries were shocking, but the court proceedings and the following phrases made the crime all the more disturbing.

Corbett's death and the circumstances within the framework of the case are also of considerable public interest a decade later. But who was Jason and what actually happened?

Visit us at Crime+Investigation, while we take a closer look at two contradictory stories, and a simple question: Was it murder or self -defense?

Who was Jason Corbett?

Jason Corbett was born in Limerick, Ireland in 1976. During his time in Ireland, he was married to a woman named Margaret Fitzpatrick. Jason and Margaret, who went from magazines, had two children together: Jack and Sarah.

When Jack was two years old and Sarah was 12 weeks old, Margaret suddenly died of an asthma attack. She had suffered from asthma all her life, but the attack that took her life was unexpected and serious.

Molly Martens

In 2008, two years after Mags's death, Jason Molly Martens, a 24-year-old from Knoxville, Tennessee, hired to work as an au couple for his family. The two had fallen in love until 2010.

Molly and the Corbett family planned to move to Lexington in North Carolina, and when they arrived, married Jason and Molly. The family lived for several years in Panthers Creek Court in Wallburg, North Carolina.

Tensions rise

Problems arose in the family when Molly Jack and Sarah adopted so that they could get American citizenship. The situation caused friction when Jason held the Irish passports of the family. In 2013, Martens started the children with the process of legal advice in relation to custody for the children in the event of a divorce.

Jason's sister Tracey Lynch spoke along CBS about Molly's unpredictable and controlling behavior as well as their habit. Tracey said she was concerned about Molly when she lied to a bridesmaid with her and Jason's wedding about Jason's first wife, Mags.

“Molly had told them that she was friends with magazines … before she died of cancer. Magazine did not die of cancer, she died of a asthma attack.''

Molly's mental health was also speculated, with previous medical documents showing that it had depression. Molly herself also told Tracey that she was bipolar.

The night of Jason Corbett's death

In the night of August 2, 2015, the tensions came to one head. Molly's father Thomas Martens contacted 911 in the middle of the night. He said he was intervening when Jason attacked his daughter and he thought he had killed Jason.

Jason did not react more than the authorities arrived, and he didn't die long afterwards. It was heavily beaten with a paving stone and a baseball bat. Molly and Thomas claimed that Jason strangled Molly and threatened to kill her when Thomas found her. Although they never deny that they killed Jason, the couple always argued that they were in self -defense. The story did not add up and the police began an examination of his death.

Molly told the authorities that she suffered from a domestic abuse through Jason, but Jason's family countered these claims. Jason's children – Sarah and Jack – stated that Molly said the truth about abuse. However, they later stormed this statement and said Molly had trained them and Jason was never abusive.

The attempt and the judgment

In July 2017, Molly and her father were brought to court. They were found guilty for murder's second degree and sentenced to 20 to 25 years in prison. However, this judgment was canceled in February 2020 according to an appeal procedure. A new process has been ordered.

In October 2023, Molly and Thomas Plädoyer took bargains, who changed their murder system to voluntary manslaughter. Their prison terms were significantly reduced and the two were released from prison in June 2024. They only served four years and three months for Jason's murder.

A documentary about the case on Netflix was then published. In it, Molly and Thomas Marten offer their side of history – just like Jason's children Jack and Sarah. Interestingly, both couples provide different reports about who Jason was, which drives the secret about the case.

Was Jason really an abusive husband or an innocent victim of a malignant attack? According to Jack and Sarah, who now live with the rest of the Corbett family in Ireland – it is the latter.
