What do we know about affected regions?

The city of Sanchong in the south of the country recorded eight deaths after severe rainfall caused landslides. In the region, six more were missing after falling floods destroyed houses in the area.

In Gapyeong, a city northeast of Seoul, a person was killed on Sunday after their house collapsed. Another person was found dead after being swept in the city by a swollen stream.

But the daylong flood of the rain finally subsided Sunday, with the rain in the most part of the country stopped. Subsequently, heavy rain warnings were lifted all over the country, said ministry officers.

When did rain began?

This Wednesday started strong rainfall and forced more people to evacuate their houses, with 3,840 being evacuated by Sunday. Flights were also canceled.

At the beginning of this week, three people were found dead in a underked car, and one person was also killed when her car was buried by a retaining wall during a heavy rain during a supporting wall in Osan, south of Seoul.

South Korea usually sees monsoons in July. This year, however, the country has recorded more intensive rains. Official weather data this year show that the country recorded some of the most serious precipitation per hour.

Scientists say that climate change is responsible for making such weather events both more frequently and more extreme. In 2022, heavy rains and floods in South Korea left at least 11 people dead.
